Poynter-Koch Media and Journalism Fellowship: 2023-2024

Overview

The Poynter-Koch Media and Journalism Fellowship is a year-long dynamic experiential fellowship that blends educational opportunities with work experience to accelerate your career in journalism.

 

 

What You’ll Experience

  • A world-class curriculum that examines the crucial role of a free press in society and the importance of innovation for the future of industry.
  • Learn from industry leaders from local and national newsrooms across the country, including the major daily newspapers, the top digital sites and television news networks, as well as highly-experienced leaders from smaller and more specialized media entities.   
  • Full-time employment by one our participating organizations around the United States.
  • Fellows will survey topics such as: media law, journalistic ethics, and source relationships; interviewing, reporting, and storytelling; digital tools, social platforms, and analytics; and a suite of immersive electives in professional skills and journalism.

 

About You

You are passionate about journalism and telling inspiring stories, but you know there is more to learn and want to sharpen your skills. You're a hard-worker and self-motivated. You understand the importance of free expression and the role of the press in society. You describe yourself as a life-long learner. You work well independently but also enjoy collaborating with others. You know there are media outlets that can benefit from your knowledge and skills.

 

 

Knowledge and Skills You’ll Bring to the Fellowship

  • Champion of free press and a passion for storytelling
  • Eager learner with a growth mindset, open to continual self-improvement
  • One to five years of experience in media and/or journalism
  • Desire for a new network of journalist mentors and friends.
